The spinal cord inside the spinal column has many nerve pathways connected to it transmitting signals throughout the body.  A spine diagram show some of these nerves that supply sensation to the skin and the limbs while others go into the body organs like the belly or the connectors between limbs.  Others are in and around the spinal cord and are responsible for the process of transmission.

The Lumbar Vertebrae are designated as L in the spine diagram while the Sacrum is designated as S.  The L4, L5 and S1, S2 nerves go to the hamstrings and ends while the L4, L5 and S1 nerves go to the tibialis anterior in the feet and the extension of the toes.
